Shahed Duty Free

Background Abu Dhabi Duty Free opened it's doors in 1984 and has grown from strength to strength ever since to become one of the worlds finest Duty Free complexes in the world, winning several prestigious awards along the way.
Only a year after opening ADDF received a Frontier Marketing Award, considered to be an Oscar of the Industry, at Cannes, for best new Duty Free. This was only the beginning of great achievements to come.

Design Abu Dhabi Duty Free is not only well-known for outstanding marketing concepts, top quality stores and superior service but also for the unique design of the building itself. The interior has a state of the art futuristic satellite in the form of a mushroom rising up from the floor to the ceiling in changing colours of blue and green making it seem as though the floor, ceiling and walls are made from the same material. The unique design is an attraction in itself.

As one looks from the centre of the dome to the perimeters, the colour changes gradually from green outlined in blue, to blue shapes outlined in green. The nearer you are to the outside, the bluer the décor is. This colour scheme reflects the greenery of Abu Dhabi next to the blue of the sea.

Through the years AADF has witness refurbishments, renovations and extensions taking the retail area from only six shops in 1994 to a retail area of over 5000 square meters.

Brilliantly researched and designed, Abu Dhabi Duty Free pioneered the shop-in-shop concept with branded corners for various prestigious international brands displaying their corporate identities. The range of the various retail outlets available is vast, with emphasis on branded goods. Several top brand names in fashion, fragrance, cosmetics, confectionery and more create a lavish look and feel to the retail area.
Other popular goods include gold and electronic items, local antiques and souvenirs. Small purchases are equally well covered - books or necessities like pharmaceuticals and toiletries are all displayed in a spectacular setting

New terminals
Abu Dhabi International recently increased its retail area by 1350 meters, month, with the opening of two new terminals. These terminals have been opened to accommodate the ever increasing number of passengers moving through this facility as an interin solution while major expansion plans move forward..
A terminal known as the Gulf Traveller Terminal, dedicated to Gulf Air All Economy travellers only, was opened opposite and below Terminal 1 (which is currently the main airport terminal). A second terminal, known as Terminal 2, was opened 900 meters away from Terminal 1 to cater for 15 airlines.
A third terminal, which will be known as the Etihad Terminal will open in the first half of 2006.

Sales increase
The first nine months of the year have been very successful at Abu Dhabi Duty Free with the sales showing an increase of 8.5% in total revenue in comparison to the same period last year. The biggest categories contributing to the sales were Liquor and Tobacco with 20.75%, Confectionery with 18.52% and Beauty & Fragrance with 14.86%.

The star performers so far this year have been Beauty & Fragrance with a sales increase of 21.15 %, Liquor & Tobacco 11.6% , the Destination Shop 65.6%, World of Cigars 33.5%, Gold 6.78% and Swarovski 54%.

These results are a reflection of the change of passenger profile in Terminal 1 as Etihad Airways, the National Carrier of the UAE, increases its destinations in Europe. In terms of European profile Etihad Airways has flights to Munich, Frankfort, Geneva and London which has seen Swiss, German and British passengers taking a higher share of business in Duty Free. Flights to Canada, Brussels and Johannesburg later this year will add to this trend.

August statistics show that GCC Airlines contributed the most customers who provided 66.5 percent of the sales by spending an average of AED182 per person. Etihad Airways made an impact by contributing 26.3% to this figure, an increase of 138.1% over last years figure.
Sub-continent Airlines contributed 11.8 percent with an average of AED170 per person and European Airlines contributed 7.6 percent with an average of AED198 per person.

Dubai Duty Free opened for business on December 20th 1983 and over the past two decades has grown to become the number one airport retailer in the world. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2008 Dubai Duty Free has had a remarkable quarter century that has seen its business grow from US$ 20 million (1984) to US% 1.1 billion (2008).

Employing over 3,500 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing in the Middle East. Its founding principal of offering international travelers a wide range of quality merchandise and a high level of service in a shopper-friendly environment still holds true to this day.

In 2008 Dubai Duty Free recorded a total over 21 million sales transactions, which averages at around 58,000 transactions per day, up to 11% on 2007. Category wise, Perfumes continued to be the highest selling category at Dubai Duty Free in 2008 with annual sales topping US$ 155 million which represents 14 % of total sales. Liquor retained its No. 2 position with sales of US$ 144 million and Gold was the third highest selling category with sales of US$ 125 million.

The milestone anniversary was celebrated in a number of ways, including the publication of the book ‘Fly Buy Dubai’ which provides a fascinating insight into the origins of the duty free industry.

Innovative Promotions

Dubai Duty Free also runs innovative and successful promotions: the world famous Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw, which began as a one-off in December 1989 and continues to capture the public’s imagination. With 1000 tickets offered at US$139, passengers have the chance to win a car or more recently, a Harley Davidson motorbike with tickets cost just US$28.
On average, Dubai Duty Free presents a luxury car every week of the year, and since its inception has had over 1380 winners from 68 different countries.

The success of the Finest Surprise let to the launch in 1999 of the Millennium Millionaire which offers 5000 ticket holders the chance to win US$ 1 million. The Millennium Millionaire promotion is highly popular and has resulted in 97 dollar millionaire.

To coincide with the operation’s 25th anniversary and opening of Emirates Terminal 3, Dubai Duty Free launched its one-off ‘Multi-Millionaire’ that offered 5000 ticket holders the chance to win US$5 million in prize money.  The draw for the first US$5 million took place on 2nd August 2009.

Soaring to New Heights.

There seems to be no stopping Dubai Duty Free. Consistently high sales during its 25 years of exceptional growth have helped it to become firmly established as one of the world’s retailing giants. In July 2009, Generation Research named Dubai Duty Free as the No. 1 Airport Retailer in the world in terms of turnover, ahead of both London Heathrow and Seoul Incheon Airport.

Record sales year on year have long been the hallmark of Dubai Duty Free and the first half of 2009 shows that the operation is well on target for another bumper year. Half-year sales have reached an impressive US$ 511 million.

The operation doubled its retail space from 7,000 square metres to 15,000 with the inauguration of the new Emirates Terminal 3 that has two large Arrival Shops and four Landside Shops at the Departure providing 200 points of sale terminals.

To date, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 150 awards from industry, media and government bodies; a testimony to the operation's mammoth success. Awards came thick and fast in 2009 and in January Dubai Duty Free was presented with the Global Traveller Award for the 'Best Duty Free Shops' for the second consecutive year. In April, at the Middle East Events Awards 2009, Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director was presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award in the Middle East Events Industry', which recognized his outstanding contribution towards the successful staging of events in Dubai. In May, Dubai Duty Free received its 8th consecutive Business Traveller Middle East Award for 'Best Duty Free Shopping' and its 10th consecutive 'Middle East Travel Retailer of the Year' at the DFNI Asia Pacific Awards in Singapore.

In June, Dubai Duty Free was named 'Best Duty Free
Shopping' in the world in the 2009 World Airport survey conducted by Skytrax, an independent research company which interviewed 8.6 million passengers in 196 airports over a 10 month period.   This award is recognized as being one of the most important in the industry and Dubai Duty Free won this award for a second time, the first award was in 2004.

EgyptAir for Tourism (El Karnak) and Duty Free Shops Company (EADFS) operated since 1962 as a dedicated duty free division of the State-owned Egypt Air. Since that time, it opened and operated many duty free shopping facilities at the most important airports in Egypt. Its turnover has increased from $39 million in 2002/3 to $70.8 million in the period July 2005 – Jun 2006 and further considerable growth is forecast in the coming years.

In September 2003 it was incorporated as a separate company and following a change in senior management, the company has undertaken a serious policy of business renewal.

To this end, it appointed Aer Rianta International (Middle East) W.L.L. in October 2004, as consultants to advise and assist in an internal change process, designed to lead the company forward to meet the challenges of the future, with a keen eye on both refurbishing/developing shops to international standards and focusing attention on all matters related to Customer Service.

    The New Model
EADFS has specifically set out, in its recent contract with CityStars in Nasr City, to create a duty free retail outlet, which would showcase the company’s plans for moving forward to all the stakeholders of the company. This showcase operation incorporates the elements of change which are ongoing now inside the company and will bring it to a new level of international standard which will enhance the airports and impress airport users.

    City Stars Wine Shop

    Corporate Identity
A new corporate identity was launched in 2005, which depicts a modern bright, family oriented, exciting image to the customer. The colours chosen are vibrant and bold, the image portraying a family enjoying the excitement of shopping. New uniforms were introduced for the CityStars shop opening. These are now being rolled out throughout the company.

    Shop designs
The company is, step by step, introducing new shop designs across its operations. The shops in Luxor Departures were designed and constructed within a very demanding turn-around to meet the needs of the new Terminal opening. Cairo Airport’s Arrivals Hall 3 was also constructed in the same fashion. Further new shops opened at Luxor and El Gouna.
With International Concession Agreements signed for both Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh the company is in the process of constructing new shops which will provide 920 Sq. metres of sales area in Hurghada and 792 sq. metres in Sharm El Sheikh Terminal 1. This new Terminal will open in March 2007.
The company has recently signed a concession agreement to operate the duty free shops exclusively in Cairo Airport Terminal 3. This new Terminal will open in 2008. The Concession Agreement covers duty free shopping in Terminals 1, 2 & 3 until December 2016. EADFS has exclusivity in the traditional duty free departments of liquor, tobacco and perfume in both Cairo Terminal 2 and 3.

    Purchasing & product range
EADFS accepted a development plan for its Purchasing division and is now introducing the recommended changes. These changes will assist greatly in focusing the energies of this key function to the company’s developing requirements. There is now more emphasis on range review which, together with initiatives in improving margins, warehousing and seeking changes in relation to the application of Customs procedures, will further improve the company’s efficiency, sales and profitability.

    Interest to meet new suppliers
EADFS is interested in meeting manufacturers of high quality product, who wish to supply our growing company. The company priority is to deal with principles rather than agents.

Current locations of EADFS duty free shops
  • Cairo Terminal 1 in Departures, Arrivals and Post Arrivals
  • Cairo Terminal 2 in Departures, Arrivals and Post Arrivals
  • Nozha Airport, Alexandria in Departures, Arrivals and Post Arrivals

International Duty Free Trading & Agencies After 10 years of duty free experience in Europe, including duty free retail, diplomatic supply in Europe, IDFTA was established in 1984 in Cairo, mainly to acquire first class agencies for the Egyptian Duty Free Market, on commission basis according to the Egyptian Regulations. Today, IDFTA [ with its over 100 dedicated employees ] accounts as one of the major suppliers to all duty free shops in Egypt including its own.

In 1995 IDFTA decided to import and distribute confectionery and foodstuff, cosmetics, spirits and tobacco directly and to distribute these products in the duty free and domestic market. A bonded warehouse in the transit area in Port Said was built and equipped with refrigerating units specially to store all kinds of confectionery and foodstuff. Today IDFTA supplies 99% of all imported confectionery and fine foods sold at the Egyptian Duty Free outlets, as well as, amongst others, Imperial Tobacco brands, Bvlgari Perfumes, Montblanc Accessories, and a wide variety of spirits, directly from the Port Said and the airports warehouse. This has limited the "out of stock situations" to a minimum, as well as granted IDFTA the unique position of being the first duty free wholesaler operating in Egypt.

In 1996, IDFTA was granted the first ever concession for a duty free sales outlet to the private sector at Cairo Airport Terminal 1. At the same time IDFTA acquired two bonded warehouses at Terminal 1 (1 refrigerated and 1 dry) to act as a hub to supply its own shops and also other duty free outlets in Cairo with small quantities, as well as to store consignments shipped by airfreight.

In 2001 IDFTA acquired two duty free shops located at the pier of passengers' ships in Port Said. These shops are now fully operational. Furthermore the company obtained a concession to act as ship chandlers to supply all passengers' ships and transport vessels landing in Port Said until now obtaining their requirements from Cyprus, Greece etc. To be able to have enough stored goods of all kinds (including alcoholic beverages tobacco, perfumes etc.) IDFTA has completed the second phase of the Port Said warehouse project and hence enlarged the storing capacity.
In 2002 IDFTA was granted a duty free concession at Cairo Airport Terminal2 departure area. Concession covers Confectionery, gift items, watches pens etc. This outlet "The Last Minute Shop" is now fully operational.

The mission of this family owned and managed company is to be ''your dedicated partner'' in success in the Egyptian market.

    Nature of Business

IDFTA is the sole agent and distributor of various blue chip companies (mainly consumer brands) including various European and American spirits brands as well as tobacco, foodstuff, confectionery, cosmetics, accessories and gift items.IDFTA is also working in Direct Import to supply all above mentioned products mainly to the duty free, but also to the domestic market through its depot in Port Said.Mr. Kamal Toulan, Managing Director of IDFTA, is also Co-founder and member of Board of Directors of Middle East Duty Free Organization (MEDFA) with seat in Dubai

    Analysis of Business
Opportunities identified by IDFTAIDFTA identifies the following points as positive, promising factors/opportunities in the market:The influx of tourists and business people as well as changes in the economic and social environment are definitely increasing demand for overseas travel both inbound and outbound. This is subsequently an opportunity to IDFTA to increase sales of its products through the various outlets in the Airports as well as all the downtown free shops and Port Said. The luxury items market is growing in Egypt through passengers, diplomats, foreign organizations or returnees. It is expected that the purchase of these products will further increase through the duty free channels. This guarantees a long-term position of the company in the market.IDFTA has started to supply ship chandlers through its Port Said hub. The duty free shops in Port Said sell to passengers' ships landing in Port Said, as well as crews of vessels crossing the Suez Canal.

    Marketing & Distribution
Strategic Objectives:The strategic objective of IDFTA is to be ready to diversify its operation more towards having direct imports and distribution network of imported goods which will be very attractive in the near future once the GATT agreement is in place. This will be very much feasible through a well-formulated inventory system as well as the key advantage of having the Port Said Depot in a transit area.A further objective is to improve the service provided to the existing clients and to maintain the company's position as a market leader in the brands represented. This service will mainly be reflected in higher responsiveness to customer requirements by expanding the product mix in the Port Said Depot to include spirits, tobacco, perfumes etc. to improve the sales operation directly to clients especially to Diplomats, foreign organizations and ships.
