Dubai Duty Freeopened for business on December 20th 1983 and has grown to become the No. 1 Airport retailer in the world in terms of turnover of US$1.14 billion in 2009. With a retail operation currently covering 15,000 square metres at Dubai International Airport, Dubai Duty Free is busy planning for future expansion both at the existing airport and in Al Maktoum International Airport.
Located just one kilometre from Dubai International Airport, Dubai Duty Free’s 6,000 square metre Head Office and adjoining 27,000 square metres Distribution Centre, has provided much needed expansion room for the operation which recorded over 20.3 million sales transactions in 2009, or an average of 55,800 sales transactions per day.
Dubai Duty Free continues to witness positive sales growth in 2010 with sales for the first half reaching US$607 million, a 16% increase over the same period last year.
Employing over 3,900 people, Dubai Duty Free has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing in the Middle East and internationally. Its founding principal of offering international travellers a wide range of quality merchandise and a first class retail experience in a shopper-friendly environment still holds true to this day.
To date, Dubai Duty Free has received over 160 awards since it began operation in 1983, and recent awards include the following: ‘Best Airport in Duty Free Shopping’ at the Business Traveller Middle East Awards and the Global Traveller Award for ‘Best Duty Free Shop’ held in New York. In July, the operation was presented with the ‘Brand of the Year’ at the 6th Annual Superbrands tribute event, dubbed globally as the 'Oscars of Branding' While the successful running of the shopfloor is a major focus for Dubai Duty Free,the operation is highly committed to promoting Dubai through a series of high level sporting events such as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
Other sports benefiting from the operation’s sponsorship and support include major golf tournaments, horseracing events at home and overseas, rugby, powerboat and basketball to name a few.
Innovative Promotions
Dubai Duty Free also runs innovative and successful promotions: the world famous Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw, which began as a one-off in December 1989 and continues to capture the public’s imagination. With 1,000 tickets offered at Dhs500 (US$139), passengers have the chance to win a car or more recently, a Harley Davidson motorbike with tickets cost just Dhs100 (US$28).
The success of the Finest Surprise led to the launch in 1999 of the Millennium Millionaire promotion to win US$1 million, which has captured the imagination of travellers around the globe. Tickets are priced at Dhs1,000 (US$278) each and limited to 5,000 ticket holders.
In October 2009 Dubai Duty Free has launched the next phase of its world famous promotions with the ‘Double Millionaire’ draw to win US$2 million. Each ticket costs Dhs2,000 (US$556) and is limited to 5,000 ticket holders.
